The functions of bill of lading:

  1. A receipt for a cargo signed by the master or by the owner port agent on behalf of the carrier, with remarks of the cargo.
  2. A document of title of cargo, means the property may transferred to another party
  3. Evidence of the contract governing terms and condition of carriage
TYPES OF BILL OF LADING:
                                   There are 9 types of bill of lading they are


CLEAN BILL OF LADING:
                        A bill of lading is  issued by a carrier declaring that the goods have been received in a good condition. The carrier will give a clean bill of lading by inspecting the packages for any damage, missing quantities etc..

FOUL BILL OF LADING:
                            This is the type of bill of lading which is in some way claused or damage. This means that the cargo loaded is not perfect and ship owner tries to protect him from the claims at the discharge port.

RECEIVED FOR SHIPMENT BILL OF LADING:
                                    A document issued by the carrier that looks like the bill of lading as evidence for received for goods for shipment.This type of bill of loading is issued prior to the vessel of loading and therefore its not on board bill of lading. This is also common in container trades where containers are taken in carriers custody at inland depots.

SHIPPED BILL OF LADING:
                             A bill of lading actually issued after the goods are shipped in the vessel. Any previous "RECEIVED FOR SHIPMENT BILL OF LADING" should to be surrendered back before issuing this

DIRECT BILL OF LADING:
                        This bills covers the carriage of goods in one vessel from one port to another.

THROUGH BILL OF LADING:
                                It is issued where the cargo will be a part of the voyage,the reminder of the voyage will be overland or another vessel.

COMBINED TRANSPORT BILL OF LADING:
                                This applies to the cargo carried by more means other than the ship eg: land, air etc. This is common in the container trade

ORDER BILL OF LADING:
                             This is commonly used it is as a document credit transaction. It can be compared as a cheque drawn to cash. once it is endorsed by the shipper it becomes effective a "bearer cheque"

LINER BILL OF LADING:
                            This contains more details than the charter party bill of lading because the reverse of the liner bill of lading contains the full text of the contract of the carriage.
